Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has been recognized as the most budget-friendly European city to enjoy the Christmas festivities this year. Skyscanner reports that travelers can fly to Vilnius in December for as little as £35. Not only is Vilnius affordable, but its Christmas tree has been hailed as the most beautiful in Europe multiple times, earning it the title of European Christmas Capital for 2025 by the Christmas Cities Network.
The Christmas season in Vilnius officially begins on November 29th with the lighting of the majestic Christmas tree in Cathedral Square. This iconic tree will remain illuminated until January 6th, 2026, allowing plenty of time for visitors and locals to immerse themselves in the holiday cheer. Visitors can explore the enchanting Christmas Market, skate on the Vilnius ice rink in the heart of the Old Town, and take a ride on the Christmas train through the festively decorated streets of Vilnius.
Vilnius has claimed the top spot as the most cost-effective destination for a festive getaway among 15 European cities, according to the annual Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer. The total cost for a two-night weekend escape in Vilnius is a mere £509, covering return flights, accommodation in three or four-star hotels, airport transfers, two evening meals with beverages, as well as festive drinks and snacks at the Christmas Market.
Despite fluctuations in currency values, Vilnius remains an affordable option, with costs remaining stable since last year and even decreasing by 0.4% compared to 2024. In fact, Vilnius is 8% more affordable than the second-ranked city, Riga, where costs have risen by 1.8%.
Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, emphasized the value of choosing carefully when planning a holiday to a European Christmas market. She noted that while sterling has weakened against some European currencies, budget-conscious travelers can save significantly by making informed choices.
