A man has admitted to the killing of his daughter and the attempted murder of her mother. Mohammed Al Shaker Al Tamimi, aged 35, confessed to the murder of eight-year-old Malika Noor Al Kattib and the attempted murder of her mother, Aisha Noor Al Kattib, at their residence in New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland, on December 1, 2024. Both mother and daughter were assaulted, resulting in fatal injuries to the child. Medical personnel rushed to the scene to provide emergency care to Malika, who was later transferred to University Hospital Waterford, where she unfortunately passed away. Prosecuting counsel Anne Rowland informed the court that the mother, Aisha, is currently emotionally vulnerable and will provide a victim impact statement in December.
During the court proceedings, defense counsel Michael Bowman mentioned that all details were explained to the defendant, Al Tamimi. Although an interpreter was available, Al Tamimi’s proficiency in English was noted. The defense also requested ongoing medical attention for Al Tamimi while in custody. Al Tamimi confirmed his identity and pleaded guilty to each charge presented in court. He has been detained pending sentencing on December 15, where the victim impact statement will be considered. Al Tamimi is facing a potential life sentence.
Following Malika’s tragic death, New Ross Educate Together National School, where she was a student, activated a critical incident response with the assistance of mental health professionals. Principal Theresa White expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We were informed this morning of the loss of a student at our school. This is a devastating event for the family, our school, and the community. Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.” The school has enacted their Critical Incident Management Plan and received support from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) to aid teachers in addressing students’ needs during this distressing time. Parents are being provided with guidance on supporting their children through this difficult period, with a request for privacy to be respected.
