One year into my tenure as Policing Minister, the commitment I made to combat knife crime and enhance community safety is being fulfilled. The concerted efforts of the Home Office and law enforcement agencies have resulted in a noticeable decline in knife-related incidents, saving lives and fostering a safer environment.
Significant progress has been made through targeted enforcement and preventative measures in areas plagued by the threat of knife robberies. A specialized group dedicated to addressing knife robberies in high-incidence areas has successfully reduced such crimes by 15% since June 2024, translating to nearly 2,500 fewer incidents. This success underscores the effectiveness of data-driven policing strategies in safeguarding communities and preventing violence proactively.
Furthermore, the success of our County Lines Programme is evident, with the dismantling of numerous exploitative drug networks that fuel knife crime and exploit vulnerable youth. Over 3,000 communication lines have been shut down since July 2024, leading to more than 8,200 arrests, including charges against 1,600 line holders, and the seizure of around 1,000 knives. These operations have not only disrupted criminal networks but also provided support to over 4,300 at-risk individuals and over 600 children through dedicated services, aiding them in escaping exploitation and building safer futures.
The impact of these initiatives is tangible, with a 25% reduction in hospital admissions for stabbings in areas associated with high drug supply volumes. By addressing drug misuse hospitalizations and implementing targeted interventions, families are being spared from anguish, and communities are being infused with hope.
The progress achieved is a result of strategic planning and collaboration with experts, utilizing innovative approaches like knife surrender schemes that have removed nearly 60,000 weapons from circulation. The implementation of cutting-edge mapping technology has enabled the identification of localized knife crime hotspots, facilitating more effective policing strategies in partnership with local entities.
Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and schools to steer youth away from criminal activities, while initiatives like the Young Futures Panel pilots are intervening early to protect those most vulnerable. Additionally, legislative measures such as Ronan’s Law, aimed at enhancing penalties for offenders and bolstering victim protections, send a resolute message that knife crime will not be tolerated.
Efforts to curb online knife sales through stringent age verification checks and proposals for a licensing scheme to restrict access for criminals and youth are also underway. The collaborative approach of the government, law enforcement, and communities has yielded tangible results, underscoring the potential for positive change when united against serious crime.
While the battle against knife crime continues, the achievements of the past year demonstrate the transformative impact of collective action. Every surrendered knife, closed County Line, and safeguarded child signifies lives preserved and futures secured. The shift from rising to declining knife crime is a testament to our unwavering commitment to eradicating serious violence from our communities and providing every young person with the opportunity for a safer tomorrow.
