Milton Keynes, often labeled as a “soulless” city, is known for its distinctive urban layout featuring roads, car parks, and recreational amenities reminiscent of American suburban areas. Constructed in the 1960s, the city stands out from traditional UK towns with its contemporary design, grid road network, railway links to London, and reputation as a center for automotive and technology industries.
The city’s American-like characteristics, such as spacious roads, modern architecture, and street names like avenue and boulevard, have caught the attention of visitors. A viral Instagram post highlighting these similarities received significant engagement. Resident Tom Winterton, who relocated to Milton Keynes from London in early 2021, acknowledges these parallels and emphasizes that they go beyond just the physical infrastructure.
Tom describes the city’s ambiance as futuristic, attributed to its focus on motoring and technology. Hosting prominent brands like Red Bull, Mercedes-Benz, Santander, and Volkswagen Group, Milton Keynes was the first in the UK to introduce Lime bikes and a Starship robot delivery service for quick food deliveries, resembling a tech-forward approach akin to California’s Silicon Valley.
Regarding the city’s planning and development, Tom believes that Milton Keynes prioritizes innovation and livability. He appreciates the ease of navigating the city’s grid system, which segregates cyclists and pedestrians from vehicular traffic, allowing for safe and efficient travel. Tom highlights the city’s family-friendly environment, quick accessibility to various areas, and abundant green spaces, challenging the outdated perception of Milton Keynes as a bland, car-centric locale.
In response to ongoing criticism, Tom dismisses the notion of Milton Keynes being soulless or overly Americanized, emphasizing its evolution into a vibrant and family-friendly community. He regards the city as a hidden gem offering a unique living experience, contrary to the outdated stereotypes associated with it.
