“UK Minister Criticized for Supreme Court Independence Threat”

Date:

Robert Jenrick is facing criticism for proposing a plan reminiscent of Donald Trump’s approach, potentially diminishing the independence of the Supreme Court in favor of political influence.

During a recent speech, the Shadow Justice Secretary launched a scathing attack on judges, vowing to reinstate ministerial control over judicial appointments. He emphasized his commitment to preventing any political bias among judges and revealed alleged connections between judges and open borders advocacy groups.

However, the government swiftly rebuked Mr. Jenrick, accusing him of undermining British values by jeopardizing the unity that institutions and traditions provide to the nation. Former Supreme Court Justice, Lord Sumption, cautioned against Mr. Jenrick’s proposal to remove “activist” judges, warning of a shift towards a more politically influenced judiciary similar to the United States.

Lord Sumption highlighted the potential risks of granting more power to British politicians over the judiciary, drawing parallels to the U.S. system where presidential influence over the Supreme Court has raised concerns about autocratic behavior. He stressed the importance of maintaining judicial independence for public trust in the legal system.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy criticized Jenrick for disregarding British values and endangering democratic principles by interfering with the independence of judges. Lammy emphasized that judicial independence is a fundamental pillar of British democracy, and any attempt to politicize the judiciary represents a regression in democratic standards.

In his address, Mr. Jenrick condemned judges who he believes blur the line between impartial adjudication and activism, pledging to restore the judiciary’s proper role by shifting ultimate power back to Parliament and accountable ministers. He announced plans to revive the Lord Chancellor’s authority in appointing judges, aiming to eliminate political bias in judicial appointments.

On a separate note, Mr. Jenrick received a warning against potentially prejudicing a future appeal concerning the decision to drop terrorism charges against Kneecap rapper Liam Og O hAnnaidh. Lord Hermer, the Attorney General, advised Jenrick to avoid making public statements that could prejudice future legal proceedings. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed its intention to appeal the dismissal of the case against O hAnnaidh due to a technical error.
