A tragic incident occurred at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, where a school staff member, Amy Morrell, aged 53, lost her life after an altercation with a 14-year-old student. The student allegedly attempted to leave a residence hall without permission, leading to Morrell’s intervention and subsequent fatal chest injury.
Morrell collapsed shortly after the attack, despite colleagues administering CPR and calling emergency services. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away the following day. The incident has resulted in the unnamed teenager being charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily harm, as confirmed by the Bristol County District Attorney’s office. The pupil faced arraignment at Fall River Juvenile Court.
Described as a comprehensive therapeutic residential school near the Rhode Island state border, Meadowridge Academy caters to individuals aged 12 to 21 with mental health and behavioral challenges. The school, which enrolled just 35 students last year, is part of the Justice Resource Institute network.
Following this tragic event, Jennie DunKley, an advocate for individuals with special needs, expressed hope that the incident would shed light on schools like Meadowridge Academy. She emphasized the importance of implementing preventive strategies to avoid escalation and the need for restraint and seclusion measures.
In response to the tragedy, a spokeswoman for Meadowridge Academy extended condolences to Amy Morrell’s family and offered support services to assist grieving students and staff. The police investigation into the case remains ongoing.
