“UK Carrier Eastern Airways Ceases Operations, Leaves Remote Airport Stranded”

Date:

Commercial flights to a remote airport in the UK have been suspended, leaving the aviation hub inaccessible. UK carrier Eastern Airways has ceased operations and canceled all flights, impacting the Scottish town of Wick, which heavily relied on the airline for connectivity. The Civil Aviation Authority in the UK has advised customers not to travel to the airport as flights will no longer be available.

Eastern Airways, known for operating regional routes across the UK, served various destinations including Aberdeen, Humberside, London Gatwick, Newquay, Teesside International, and Wick. While other airlines continue to operate at these airports, Wick John O’Groats, located at the northernmost tip of mainland UK, remains without service.

Aside from Gama Aviation, a business aviation company, no other carriers are currently listed as serving Wick according to FlightRadar data. This situation leaves the remote airport and the town isolated by air, especially considering the lengthy train journeys required to reach major cities like London and Glasgow from Wick.

Wick, a picturesque coastal town in Caithness with a rich history, attracts visitors for its stunning landscapes and maritime heritage. Popular attractions include the dramatic ruins of Sinclair and Girnigoe castles, scenic walks to Noss Head Lighthouse, and unique spots like Ebenezer Place, acknowledged as the world’s shortest street.

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), the owner of Wick John O’Groats Airport, stated that despite Eastern Airways filing for administration, the airport will continue normal operations. Passengers are advised to contact the airline for flight information and seek alternative travel options through other airlines, rail, or coach services.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s consumer and markets director, Selina Chadha, emphasized that passengers should not proceed to the airport due to all Eastern Airways flights being canceled. For updated information, Eastern Airways customers are directed to the Civil Aviation Authority’s website.
