“Survey Reveals Most Overlooked Household Chores”

Date:

Household chores often overlooked but essential for running a smooth home include scrubbing the toilet, taking out the trash, and ensuring clean laundry is available. A recent survey highlighted that tasks like unclogging the shower drain, organizing clean clothes, vacuuming, and cleaning the stovetop are also commonly ignored.

A study of 2,000 adults showed that most of these responsibilities go unnoticed, with three-quarters acknowledging that one person in the household typically handles the majority of these duties. Furthermore, those who avoid pitching in around the house tend to take for granted the hard work done by others.

Apart from the top 10 chores, neglected tasks like clearing expired food, cleaning the fridge shelves and freezer, and unloading the dishwasher were also identified. The survey was conducted by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA), which runs the ‘Know Watt’s What’ website to educate households on how minor changes in behavior can lead to significant energy bill reductions.

Stefan Hay, CEO of AMDEA, commended individuals who diligently perform tasks such as laundry and dishwashing on energy-saving modes, emphasizing the importance of these seemingly small chores in maintaining an efficient household. The survey revealed that 85% of participants consider such chores crucial for household functionality, with 94% of those who actually perform them echoing this sentiment.

Despite feeling unappreciated, one in five respondents admitted to handling at least six unnoticed chores daily. Their motivation stems from a distaste for mess, the desire to prevent chaos, and a sense of accomplishment from maintaining a clean home. Some even take pride in being the household hero.

When carrying out household duties, 68% of respondents prioritize energy efficiency by using appliances sensibly, like boiling only necessary water or running full loads. Two-thirds engage in these activities to reduce energy costs, while three-quarters believe they could do more to enhance energy efficiency, citing barriers such as appliance upgrade costs and convenience over efficiency.

Stefan Hay emphasized the cumulative impact of small household tasks on well-being and longevity of belongings, urging individuals to make minor adjustments to their routines for cost and energy savings. By adopting clever energy-saving techniques and using appliances efficiently, households can achieve a cleaner home and lower energy bills.
