“£25 Cold Weather Payment: Don’t Miss Out!”

Date:

DWP benefit recipients are being urged to keep an eye on their bank accounts as a one-time payment of £25 may be headed their way. This payment is part of the Cold Weather Payment scheme and is designed to assist individuals receiving certain benefits when temperatures consistently drop below freezing. The £25 payments are automatically distributed to eligible recipients living in areas where temperatures are below zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days.

Despite the automatic issuance of these payments, concerns have been raised that some recipients may overlook the additional funds in their accounts. Fiona Peake, a personal finance expert at Ocean Finance, highlighted that individuals who do not regularly monitor their bank statements, particularly those moving between addresses or changing bank accounts, may miss out on this payment. The payment, denoted as ‘DWP CWP’ for England residents or ‘SSA DWP’ for Northern Ireland residents, may go unnoticed among other transactions on the bank statement.

In Scotland, the Cold Weather Payment scheme has been replaced by the Winter Heating Payment, a one-off payment of £59.75. Recipients can check if a Cold Weather Payment has been triggered in their area by using the postcode checker on the official government website.

While individuals receiving Pension Credit generally qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, additional criteria may need to be met for other benefit recipients. For example, Universal Credit claimants must meet specific conditions, such as neither they nor their partner being employed or ‘gainfully self-employed,’ and fulfilling one of two additional conditions related to health conditions/disabilities or having a child under 5 living with them. The full eligibility rules are available on the government website.

If eligible recipients believe they should have received the Cold Weather Payment but have not, they are advised to contact the Pension Service, Jobcentre Plus, or the Universal Credit helpline for assistance.
