“Rare 1952 UK Penny Could Fetch £200,000”

Date:

An expert is advising the public to keep an eye out for one of the rarest coins in the UK, which could fetch up to £200,000 among collectors. The sought-after coin, known as the 1952 proof penny, was highlighted in a video shared on the social media platform TikTok by a coin specialist nicknamed the Coin Collecting Wizard. Unlike regular circulation coins, proof coins are early samples of a coin issue and represent the highest quality produced by a mint.

This particular proof coin dates back to 1952, just before the passing of King George VI, adding to its allure and value. The Coin Collecting Wizard emphasized the uniqueness of this 1952 UK penny, stating it is the rarest proof penny within the series of copper and bronze pennies. Surprisingly, the existence of this specific coin was not publicly known until it surfaced at a numismatic auction in October 1997, 45 years after it was minted.

During the auction, the 1952 proof penny fetched £23,468, equivalent to nearly £47,000 in today’s currency. The expert further described this coin as an enigma, being the only unique proof striking of a pre-decimal penny from the 20th century. Notably, the scarcity of this coin can be attributed to King George VI’s early demise in 1952.

Recently, a fine example of the 1952 proof penny was sold at an auction for an impressive £200,000, reinforcing its status as a highly coveted collector’s item. Sovereign Rarities experts added that the scarcity of this coin is understandable, considering that in 1952, only smaller currency denominations were minted due to the anticipation of a new reign under Queen Elizabeth II.

Measuring 31mm in size and crafted in bronze, pre-decimal pennies feature King George VI’s profile on the obverse side, accompanied by the Latin inscription “GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF.” On the reverse side, Britannia is depicted seated with a heraldic shield and trident, alongside the inscription “ONE PENNY 1952.” This unique coin continues to capture the interest of collectors and enthusiasts alike.
