A newly born baby girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, was discovered abandoned on the steps of a bustling train station during the Monday morning rush hour. The infant was found around 9:30 a.m. at the entrance to the southbound 1, 2, and 3 trains at the 34th Street–Penn Station stop in New York City, as reported by the police.
Upon finding the baby, the individual promptly contacted 911, leading to a quick response from emergency responders. Emergency services arrived to find the baby conscious and alert, and she was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities are currently examining surveillance footage from the vicinity to identify the person responsible for abandoning the child. As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
Commenting on the event, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow dubbed it the ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’ noting the anonymous report of an infant at the station. The FDNY and the NYPD found the unattended baby upon arrival.
This incident follows an investigation launched after a newborn baby girl was discovered abandoned in a cardboard box on the side of a road. The finding occurred around 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, when a passerby noticed the infant, who seemed to be only a few hours old. The baby was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed her good health. She was estimated to be less than a day old, given that her umbilical cord had already been severed.
The baby was found in Tuguegarao City, Philippines, according to a statement released by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Facebook. The infant, under the care of social worker May Asuncion from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, is stable but will undergo observation in the hospital for up to five days to ensure continued well-being.
Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the swift response of local citizens and authorities, emphasizing the value of every life. He stated in the PNP’s official release that efforts will persist until the individual who abandoned the child is identified.
