“Mount Etna Ash Eruptions Disrupt European Flights”

Date:

Flights at Catania airport in Sicily faced another halt on Wednesday due to new ash emissions from Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest and most active volcano. This led to an extension of airspace restrictions, causing travel disruptions during the busy summer holiday period. The impact of the recent eruption was not limited to Sicily, as neighboring Malta experienced flight cancellations and significant delays due to volcanic ash drifting south across the Mediterranean.

Mount Etna frequently affects operations at Catania airport, which serves as Sicily’s primary gateway and is the fifth busiest airport in Italy based on passenger traffic. Recent volcanic activities have had significant repercussions on travelers in the region. Images captured during the eruption on July 5 and 6 depict lava flows and smoke emanating from the volcano’s crater.

Satellite imagery from Tuesday shows smoke spreading from Mount Etna, while drone footage captured lava flowing down a slope during the eruption. Travel disruptions have been ongoing in eastern Sicily since last week, with ash clouds from Etna affecting the region. Stranded passengers were seen waiting at the terminal following the airport closure due to the volcanic ash cloud on Monday.

Although conditions seemed to improve on Wednesday, Malta International Airport continued to caution passengers about potential disruptions. The extended restrictions at Catania airport have led to increased pressure on other airports in Sicily. Palermo’s airport had to accommodate 190 flights originally destined for Catania, while Comiso airport, located south of Catania, resumed full operations after temporarily suspending flights due to Etna’s ash on Tuesday evening.
