“Canadian Filmmaker Matt Johnson Dives into Anthony Bourdain’s Early Life in Biopic ‘Tony'”

Date:

Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson, just days away from his wedding and a new movie project, appeared relaxed during an interview last week at Toronto’s Revue Cinema. Johnson discussed “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of the renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Although Bourdain was highly regarded even after his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in portraying his story.

Initially not planning to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The script draws from Bourdain’s early life experiences outlined in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain worked as a chef for the first time.

By concentrating on the young Bourdain, Johnson aimed to avoid the pressure of capturing the older, well-established figure that many fans idolize. The narrative delves into Bourdain’s formative years, exploring his relationships and self-perception as he entered adulthood.

“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on August 14. The film’s approach to Bourdain’s story is intended to offer a fresh perspective and resonate with audiences who admire the late chef and author.
