“Nick Reiner Charged with Parents’ Murder in LA”

Date:

A grand jury in Los Angeles County has charged Nick Reiner with murder for the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, claiming that he ambushed them. The indictment was issued on July 20 and made public when Nick Reiner, aged 32, pleaded not guilty.

The renowned director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their home in the upscale Brentwood area of Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was swiftly apprehended and formally charged two days later.

By bypassing California’s preliminary hearing process, the grand jury indictment marks a significant advancement towards a trial. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman remarked, “This was a significant betrayal by an individual who was cherished and relied upon by the very individuals he is accused of murdering.”

The unsealed indictment discloses little new information about the case, but the lying in wait accusation makes Reiner eligible for the death penalty, although prosecutors have yet to decide on pursuing it. The document mentions the use of a knife in the homicides, aligning with earlier reports that the couple was stabbed.

Numerous details surrounding the tragedy remain undisclosed to the public, with prosecutors keeping silent on possible motives and leaks being scarce. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to make the autopsy reports public but has been restrained by a court order.

In a parallel legal matter, Reiner is seeking access to funds from a trust established by his parents to support his defense. According to court documents, the trust, valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US, was intended for Nick Reiner even if his parents were alive. Reiner is aiming to retain prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson, who had represented him initially before a public defender took over due to a lack of funding.

The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment. Prosecutors in California can opt for a grand jury to conduct proceedings in secret or follow the conventional route of a public preliminary hearing.

Rob Reiner’s career spanned from acting to directing, with notable works in the 1980s and ’90s including films like “This is Spinal Tap” and “When Harry Met Sally…”. His son Nick collaborated with him on the script for the 2015 movie “Being Charlie,” drawing from Nick’s personal battles with addiction and homelessness.

Jake Reiner, Nick’s older brother, described the ordeal of losing their parents and having Nick at the center of it as a “living nightmare” that is beyond comprehension.
