A significant number of Canadians have signed a petition urging for the expulsion of the U.S. President Donald Trump’s representative in Ottawa. The online petition demands the removal of Pete Hoekstra as the U.S. ambassador to Canada, labeling him as persona non grata. Nearly 60,000 signatures were collected by Wednesday morning, showcasing a rapid increase from the previous day.
Accusations in the petition point to Hoekstra’s actions undermining the diplomatic ties between Canada and the U.S., along with his alleged interventions in Canadian political discussions that are deemed contrary to diplomatic norms. It also calls for a parliamentary committee to investigate U.S. interference in Canadian affairs.
Initiated by a woman from Calgary, the petition is scheduled to be presented in the House of Commons by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. It also highlights Hoekstra’s remarks suggesting the possibility of Canada being annexed by the United States as a topic for discussion between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump.
Hoekstra has faced criticism for his comments on Canadian politics and the administration’s tariff strategy. He expressed discontent with the anti-American sentiment during the federal election and condemned Canadian leaders for their stance on trade matters. In response to Canadian journalists questioning his statements, Hoekstra defended his role as a representative of the President.
The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa declined to provide detailed comments on the petition but acknowledged its awareness of the situation.
Recent diplomatic expulsions targeted at China and India
In the past, Canada has expelled diplomats, including representatives from China and India, over allegations of foreign interference. For instance, a Chinese diplomat was declared persona non grata in 2023 for targeting a Canadian Member of Parliament’s family, while Indian officials were expelled following accusations of a campaign against Canadian citizens linked to a murder in British Columbia.
Current efforts by the Canadian government under Carney’s leadership aim to strengthen relations with both China and India.
