“Met Office Urges Britons to Prepare Emergency Kits for Severe Weather”

Date:

Britons residing in 31 regions are advised to put together an ’emergency’ kit ahead of the weekend, according to the Met Office. The national meteorological agency has issued five distinct alerts encompassing areas across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland from Saturday through Monday. These warnings, all at the yellow level, pertain to potential rainfall, posing risks of flooding and power disruptions.

Individuals under these warnings are encouraged to create a “flood plan” and assemble an “emergency flood kit.” They are also advised to prepare for power outages by gathering essentials such as torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessary items.

Residents in the warned areas should anticipate travel disruptions, as per the Met Office. To minimize delays, the guidance suggests checking road conditions for drivers and adjusting travel schedules accordingly.

The initial weather alert will be in effect from midday tomorrow in north-west Scotland until midday on Sunday, with rainfall estimates ranging from 30-50mm in most areas and up to 100mm in elevated areas.

Another warning covers southern parts of Scotland from Saturday evening to Monday morning, predicting accumulations of 40-60mm widely and up to 100mm on high terrain, with a potential risk to life from swift floodwaters.

A third warning encompasses northern England and parts of the Midlands from Saturday evening to Monday evening, with anticipated rainfall amounts of up to 100mm in elevated regions and 50-70mm across widespread areas.

The fourth warning pertains to all of Northern Ireland, effective from midnight Saturday to early Monday morning, forecasting 20-30mm rainfall widely and up to 50mm in high-altitude regions.

The final alert will be active in Wales from Sunday evening until Monday afternoon, with expected rainfall reaching 100mm in elevated locations and 30-40mm elsewhere, raising concerns about possible community isolation due to flooded roads.
