The upcoming final of the Davis Cup is set for Sunday, featuring a showdown between Spain and Italy for the coveted championship title. However, earlier this year, the competition faced controversy due to an on-court clash involving Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin.
The incident occurred during the first round of qualifying between Belgium and Chile back in February. Bergs, a Belgian player, accidentally knocked Garin of Chile to the ground while celebrating a break of serve.
Following the collision, Garin decided not to continue the match despite being examined by a doctor. Consequently, Garin received penalties, leading to Belgium being declared the victor.
Garin expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to continue the match. The competitive game was favoring Belgium, particularly after Bergs secured a crucial break for a 6-5 lead in the third set.
After celebrating his break, Bergs inadvertently collided with Garin, causing the Chilean player to fall. Despite being cleared by a doctor to resume playing, Garin refused and received penalties, resulting in Belgium’s overall victory.
The International Tennis Federation issued a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing the thorough evaluation of all circumstances before making a final decision.
Garin later shared a photo on Instagram showing a black eye and criticized the ITF’s handling of the incident, expressing disappointment with the outcome and thanking supporters for their understanding.
Bergs received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the umpire characterized the incident as an unfortunate accident. Bergs expressed regret over the unintended collision, apologizing to Garin and acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
The match concluded in a regrettable manner, with Bergs extending his apologies to Garin and his team, emphasizing respect for his opponents in the game of tennis.
