Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have spoken out following the disqualification of both McLaren drivers from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Norris claimed second place behind Max Verstappen, with Piastri finishing fourth, but their cars failed technical checks after the race.
The FIA announced that excessive skid-block wear led to the disqualification, nullifying their results and adding excitement to the title race with only two rounds remaining. Norris now leads Piastri and Verstappen by 24 points before the upcoming race in Qatar and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Norris expressed disappointment, attributing the disqualification to car issues and emphasizing the team’s focus on delivering top performance in Qatar. Piastri echoed the frustration, aiming to bounce back in the final two rounds where they have historically performed well.
McLaren issued an apology to Norris and Piastri, acknowledging a breach of Technical Regulations related to skid thickness. The team cited unexpected car behavior during the race and accidental damage as contributing factors, emphasizing no intentional violation and expressing regret for the lost points.
FIA scrutineers found that the planks under the McLaren cars were below the required minimum thickness, leading to an illegal ride height and subsequent disqualification. Despite the setback, McLaren remains committed to the remaining races of the season.
