Mother Arrested After One-Year-Old Son Drowns in Bathtub

Date:

A 31-year-old mother has been apprehended in connection with the demise of her one-year-old son, who drowned in the bathtub after purportedly being left unattended in the water for almost 15 minutes.

Courtney Marie Newsom was arrested and is facing charges of felony manslaughter for recklessly causing death, along with two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

Authorities were summoned to the residence on September 7 after a report of an unresponsive baby. Emergency responders discovered Newsom in the bathroom administering CPR to her son upon arrival at the scene.

Medical personnel took over life-saving measures and transported the child to a nearby hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, the young boy succumbed to his condition on September 13.

During an initial interrogation with law enforcement, Newsom, hailing from Arkansas, USA, stated that she briefly left the room while giving her child a bath and found him unresponsive upon her return.

In a subsequent interview with the Brookland Police Department, Newsom provided a different account of the events, detailing a timeline of events that indicated she was out of the bathroom for 14 minutes while the children were unattended.

A warrant for Newsom’s arrest was issued on October 8, and she was apprehended on October 11. She appeared in court on October 15, where Judge David Boling set her bond at $15,000 (£11,300), which Newsom later posted. Her arraignment is scheduled for November 25.
