“Iconic UK Shoe Retailer Closes After 153 Years”

Date:

One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers will be closing a high street store after providing services for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes in Worcester, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026. Despite this closure, the company’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue their operations without interruptions.

The decision to close the Worcester store was described as “very sad” by Managing Director Jenny Elt, citing financial challenges that made the location unsustainable for future operations. She expressed regret over the closure, emphasizing the difficulty of the decision due to the family-run nature of the business and the store’s lack of financial viability.

Worcester City Council highlighted the broader trend of increasing online shopping and a shift towards town centers focusing more on leisure and entertainment. The council, in collaboration with other local entities, has been actively supporting city center traders. Worcester boasts a diverse shopping landscape, mixing well-known high street brands with unique independent retailers. The council is committed to maintaining this model and has invested significantly in the area, including a £4.5 million renovation project in the Shambles area to enhance its appeal and accessibility.

In related news, the charity shop chain Scope closed three more high street branches over the weekend as part of its plan to shut down 77 shops this year. The recent closures in Morden, Torquay, and Washington were part of the charity’s strategic realignment following a projected £1.5 million loss. Scope had initiated consultations earlier in the year on these closures, affecting around 200 retail staff and approximately 2,000 volunteers.

Debbie Boylen, Scope’s Head of Retail, expressed sadness over the closures, recognizing the essential role of their shops in generating crucial income to support disabled individuals and their families. Following consultations with staff and volunteers, the decision was made to close the shops in Morden, Torquay, and Washington on December 6.
