Cristiano Ronaldo hints at retirement; aims to leave remarkable legacy

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current season in the Saudi Pro League could mark the end of his illustrious career. The 41-year-old football superstar, under contract with Al-Nassr in Riyadh since December 2022, is set to see his deal expire next June, with no plans for another extension, as revealed in an interview with Vogue magazine.

“This is likely my final year in football, and I aim to leave behind a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo expressed. The Portuguese forward, known for his impressive 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.

“I have my post-football future well thought out,” Ronaldo shared. “There are numerous activities to keep me occupied, making it hard to pinpoint just one. Football’s absence can create a void that needs to be filled with diverse interests, not just one.”

He added, “I plan to have more fun, travel extensively, engage in padel, a sport I truly enjoy, and continue relishing the rewards of our hard work. It’s been 25 years of significant sacrifices.”

Ronaldo, in his 25th professional season during the 2026-27 SPL campaign, boasts five Ballon d’Or accolades and five UEFA Champions League triumphs. His remarkable performance, including 28 league goals last season, propelled Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian championship in May, securing his first trophy since joining the club and the first league title for Al-Nassr since 2019.

Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener, observing from the sidelines as the team secured a 3-0 victory against Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s presence and hinted at his potential participation in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah.

Postecoglou emphasized the importance of recovery for Ronaldo and the team, especially with limited time between matches. Notably, Ronaldo’s statements align with those of his long-time rival Lionel Messi, who expressed uncertainty about his future in football following his father’s passing, hinting at a possible retirement.
