The Ottawa Redblacks have now set a new record with the longest losing streak in the modern CFL era. They suffered their 15th consecutive defeat, falling 33-21 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night, extending their losing streak from the previous season.
This milestone surpassed the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 consecutive games in 1994. Steve Daniel, a CFL historian and the league’s associate vice-president of football analytics and statistics, confirmed this achievement.
Despite the disappointment, passionate Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata expressed his dismay over the team’s performance and the lack of clarity on the underlying issues. The tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for every touchdown at home games has seen a decline due to the team’s recent lack of success.
The Redblacks’ losing streak is now the third-longest in CFL history since 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second-longest losing streak. The first place is held by two Ottawa CFL clubs that lost a combined 25 consecutive games between 1928 and 1932.
Daniel highlighted the evolution of the league post-World War II, emphasizing the professionalization of football in Canada. He noted the Redblacks’ need for a roster rebuild, especially on defense, to address their performance issues.
Despite their struggles, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering fan support through thick and thin, likening it to supporting a child in all circumstances. He remains optimistic about the team’s future despite the challenging circumstances.
