Iran Foreign Minister Condemns Trump’s Economic Threats

Date:

Iran’s foreign minister has dismissed recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced intentions to initiate the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. Abbas Araghchi stated on a social media platform that Trump’s plan is a distraction from America’s own financial challenges, emphasizing that persisting with failed policies will only lead to more defeats and hostility towards Iranians. Araghchi warned that U.S. economic pressure poses a threat to the global economy and the sovereignty of nations.

Trump’s declarations of implementing “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran came just before Araghchi’s response. In a Truth Social post, the U.S. president cautioned countries about facing “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” if they support Iran in any way, urging allies to unite against the perceived Iranian threat.

China, a major buyer of Iran’s oil, could be impacted by further U.S. economic actions, potentially triggering retaliation. When asked about Trump’s economic threats, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that sanctions and pressure tactics are not the solution, urging responsible actions and adherence to political and diplomatic approaches.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that focusing on economic measures could reduce the necessity for significant military actions against Tehran. Following the U.S. threats, oil prices surged to their highest levels in over three weeks, driven by the anticipation of financial penalties to end the prolonged conflict in the Middle East.

Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador, criticized Trump’s approach, highlighting Iran’s ability to withstand economic pressures and retaliate. Shapiro expressed concerns about escalating tensions leading to unforeseen consequences and emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions.

Iran has been under severe economic sanctions for several years, with the Trump administration imposing additional restrictions since the conflict began. Despite efforts to negotiate a lasting peace agreement, the situation remains unresolved as the 60-day negotiation period expired without progress. Trump hinted at the possibility of resuming talks in the future, leaving the situation uncertain.
