“Crackdown on Offensive Chanting at Protests Proposed”

Date:

A crackdown on protests may target offensive chanting as Keir Starmer suggested the possibility of additional restrictions. Shabana Mahmood recently proposed granting police new powers to prevent repeated demonstrations in the same location. This action followed the arrest of nearly 500 individuals during a pro-Palestine march in London over the weekend.

Despite the Prime Minister’s criticism that holding protests on the anniversary of the October 7 attacks was “un-British,” demonstrators continued their activities. Starmer, speaking as he traveled to Mumbai, highlighted the need to address the chants heard during these protests.

When asked for further details, Starmer emphasized that operational decisions are primarily within the police’s jurisdiction. However, he stressed the importance of engaging in conversations with various police forces to evaluate policing methods and explore potential measures that can be implemented. Starmer emphasized the ongoing review of existing powers and the consideration of any necessary changes or enhancements.

Furthermore, discussions with leaders of the Jewish community regarding these matters are ongoing. Stay updated by following our Mirror Politics account on Bluesky and connect with our Mirror Politics team for more insights and updates.
