ABC Sues FCC Over License Review, Alleges Censorship

Date:

ABC has taken legal action against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in response to the agency’s demand for early review of broadcast licenses. The network, along with its parent company Disney and eight local stations, filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the early renewal proceedings initiated by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a supporter of President Donald Trump.

The FCC’s order for early review of ABC’s licenses, citing diversity practices, came after a controversial statement by ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, known for criticizing Trump. ABC accused the administration of targeting its freedom of speech and seeking to revoke its licenses based on its content.

The lawsuit highlights a broader conflict between ABC and the FCC, including disputes over equal-time rules for shows critical of Trump, such as ‘The View.’ ABC argues that the administration’s actions set a dangerous precedent for media companies and threaten freedom of the press.

In response, FCC Democrat Anna Gomez praised ABC and Disney for challenging the agency’s actions, condemning what she described as government censorship and control. Carr defended the FCC’s stance, emphasizing broadcasters’ obligation to serve the public interest and uphold journalistic standards.

The FCC reaffirmed its commitment to investigating allegations of discrimination by Disney and emphasized the importance of broadcasters fulfilling their public interest obligations. The lawsuit reflects a larger debate over freedom of speech and the role of media in a democratic society.
