Ford, disapproving of the alleged surveillance, stated that he had addressed the issue with the party upon learning about it.
Regarding the expenses incurred, Ford clarified that it was party funds utilized for the trip. He noted that political parties in Ontario receive subsidies, which partly consist of taxpayer money. Despite the controversy, Ford likened the situation to media coverage during trips, emphasizing the nature of political activities.
In response to inquiries about accountability, Ford remarked that he relies on his team to ensure proper financial management, suggesting that he was not directly involved in overseeing every expenditure. While Crombie refrained from commenting on the allegations, she confirmed her vacation in Jamaica in 2023 and her stay at one of the resorts mentioned in the PC party’s financial statement. The financial records revealed expenses at the Ocean Eden Bay and Royalton Negril Hotel, yet lacked details on the specific nature and timing of these expenditures.
Opposition leaders, including NDP Leader Marit Stiles and interim Ontario Liberal Leader John Fraser, condemned the alleged surveillance as unethical and an abuse of power. Stiles criticized the act as reminiscent of divisive politics, calling for accountability within the party.
