Canada’s Trade Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, along with his American counterpart, are working on a joint proposal to present to U.S. President Donald Trump before the upcoming tariff deadline. The aim is to provide a potential trade deal solution to Trump at least a day before the deadline to allow him ample time for consideration. The plan is to prevent the imposition of new 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian imports on August 19.
LeBlanc recently held a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, marking their third face-to-face meeting in three weeks. Following the meeting, neither LeBlanc nor Canada’s chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, responded to reporters’ inquiries. LeBlanc later confirmed ongoing discussions, expressing intent to continue negotiations with Charette.
In addition to averting new tariffs, LeBlanc and Charette are seeking relief from sectoral tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber, and automobiles. They are also hoping for an extension of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) following the Trump administration’s decision not to renew the deal in July.
The U.S. administration cited various trade issues, including Canada’s response to U.S. trade policies, such as the removal of U.S. alcohol from provincial stores and alleged discrimination against U.S. motor vehicles and dairy products. Notably, the alcohol bans in most Canadian provinces have led to significant drops in wine and spirit exports to Canada.
The new tariffs are expected to impact approximately 5% of Canadian exports to the U.S., covering a range of goods from alcohol to sports equipment to building materials. Meanwhile, Conservative MPs in Canada are urging the government to prioritize strong negotiation tactics with the U.S. to secure beneficial trade agreements. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the importance of zero tariffs on softwood lumber, eliminating sectoral tariffs on steel and aluminum, a tariff-free auto pact, and exemptions to Buy America rules in infrastructure projects.
The ongoing efforts to pitch a trade deal to President Trump before the tariff deadline highlight the urgency and significance of resolving trade disputes between Canada and the U.S.
