Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema secured his second consecutive 5-year term, facing a stronger opposition challenge fueled by public discontent over lingering hardships despite economic improvements. The election commission announced the results early Tuesday, revealing Hichilema garnered around 60% of valid votes, while his main rival, Brian Mundubile, received 38%.
Commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis officially declared Hichilema as the president-elect of Zambia on August 18, 2026. This marked Hichilema’s seventh presidential bid, benefiting from the advantages of being the incumbent, while Mundubile made his first attempt at the presidency.
Throughout his campaign, the 64-year-old Hichilema emphasized his economic achievements since assuming office during the pandemic-induced debt crisis in 2021. Zambia, known for its copper resources, has been a focal point in the competition between China and the United States for its valuable minerals.
Following a relatively calm lead-up to the August 13 election, tensions quickly escalated. International observers, including the European Union, noted that while the election itself was mostly peaceful, the overall electoral process was marred by limitations on fundamental freedoms.
On the election night, authorities arrested 11 individuals, including key opposition figures, in a raid that involved gunfire while Mundubile was present. The electoral commission later halted vote counting for hours due to reports of violence against polling staff and the theft of ballot papers.
Mundubile raised concerns about potential result tampering and called for an independent investigation, though Hichilema’s camp dismissed his claims. The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops also criticized the army’s involvement in the vote counting process, stating that maintaining order during elections is the responsibility of the police.
While the opposition may contest the results through legal channels, analysts predict that any challenge is unlikely to succeed. Despite the possibility of isolated political unrest in the near future, widespread turmoil is not anticipated.
