Markham is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it welcomes the NTT IndyCar Series for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto, this will be the first time the race is being held outside the city with a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometer, 12-turn course will span the Unionville GO station grounds, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To ensure smooth access to the venue, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available west of the event area.
Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services for race attendees, offering additional trips from Union Station to Unionville GO in the mornings and afternoons on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. York Region Transit is also increasing its service frequency, while Markham is providing shuttle services between designated parking lots and the event location.
Residents have been experiencing construction impacts due to the track preparations, with road closures affecting parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard until Monday morning. Some roads will remain affected until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event, IndyCar, will feature top drivers like points leader Alex Palou, who is favored to win after an impressive season. Other contenders include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also showcase their skills in support series races.
Drivers are adjusting to the new Markham track, which offers a smoother surface compared to the bumpy roads of Toronto. Participants have noted the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the layout, with some sections being particularly tight. Tickets for the event can be purchased online, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday.
