“Rare ‘Almost Blood Moon’ Eclipse Enchants Skywatchers”

Date:

Skywatchers were treated to a partial lunar eclipse visible across the Americas, Europe, and Africa from Thursday evening into Friday. Dubbed the “almost blood moon,” the lunar eclipse reached its peak just after midnight ET, with 96 percent of the moon’s visible surface obscured by Earth’s shadow, resulting in a near-total lunar eclipse. This event was a rare occurrence as the next lunar eclipse is not expected until New Year’s Eve in 2028.

In Canada, residents observed the full moon during different phases of the lunar eclipse in the night sky. Stunning images captured the partial lunar eclipse above various locations, including Osborne Village in Winnipeg and the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto.

Other parts of the Americas also witnessed the celestial phenomenon. In Texas, a person was seen taking a cellphone photo of the lunar eclipse at the George Observatory in Needville. The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., and the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans provided picturesque backdrops for the partial lunar eclipse. Additionally, the lunar eclipse was visible over the Mexican flag in Ciudad Juarez and behind a coconut palm tree in Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil.

In Europe, the moon during the partial lunar eclipse graced the skies over Warsaw, while people gathered at Parliament Hill in Hampstead Heath, London, to take in the celestial spectacle. A plane approaching for landing in Lisbon flew past the full moon during the eclipse, and the reddish glow of the partial lunar eclipse was captured in Goutz, France.

The event provided a rare opportunity for sky enthusiasts to witness the beauty of nature and the cosmos.
