U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce scheduled joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the need to focus on denuclearizing Iran and highlighting his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump took to social media to express his concerns about the cost and perceived hostility of the exercises toward North Korea, emphasizing the country’s non-threatening behavior during his presidency.
Acknowledging that it was too late to cancel the exercises, Trump instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the joint military drills. He also mentioned his unsuccessful attempt to enlist South Korea’s support in the Iran denuclearization efforts. This move is not a new development, as Trump had previously expressed opposition to the exercises during his first term.
Despite Trump’s directive, South Korea proceeded with the planned exercises on Monday. The country’s Defense Ministry confirmed the commencement of the drills while the presidential Blue House stated that they were reviewing Trump’s comments. They expressed hopes for constructive dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea to promote peace and stability in the region.
In response to Trump’s claims about South Korea’s stance on Iran, Seoul clarified that discussions were ongoing regarding potential military contributions, considering defense readiness on the Korean Peninsula and domestic legal procedures. This decision by the U.S. president underscores a pattern of favoring leaders previously considered adversaries over traditional allies.
The joint military exercises involving 18,000 South Korean troops were designed to enhance preparedness against North Korean threats.
