Kat Smith, an experienced traveler who has explored various parts of Italy, has decided to make a lesser-known location her permanent residence. Over the past 13 years, Kat has roamed the globe, setting temporary roots in different places before moving on. Among all the destinations she has visited, one city has captured her heart, which she has called home for the past two and a half years. Trieste experienced a significant surge in overnight stays, jumping from about 700,000 in 2021 to 1.5 million in 2024, indicating a growing influx of visitors to the city. In comparison, Rome recorded 29 million overnight stays last year.
Kat shared her extensive travel experiences in Italy, mentioning her regular explorations of new destinations every month since relocating to the country in August 2023. While she frequently revisits cities like Naples, Rome, and Venice, she always makes time to discover new corners of Italy, ranging from the southern region of Puglia to the northern border with Austria, with stops in various locations including Sardinia.
According to Kat, Trieste holds a special place in her heart as one of her favorite cities. Despite being relatively under the radar internationally, Trieste is gradually gaining recognition and appreciation for its unique attributes.
The city’s charm lies in its architecture, cuisine, and local dialect, offering a distinct experience unlike anywhere else in Italy. Visitors wandering through the streets may feel closer to Vienna than Rome, especially in the central areas like Piazza Unità and Via Carducci. The culinary scene blends Austrian and Italian influences, with offerings like Sacher cakes alongside traditional croissants and goulash paired with pasta. Trieste’s proximity to the Slovenian border is evident in bilingual road signs, adding to its cultural richness.
Locals, particularly the older generation, often emphasize their Triestino identity over Italian, reflecting the historical significance of the city as the Free State of Trieste post-World War II.
