A man who had consistently denied the charges of raping and killing his neighbor 27 years ago was put to death on death row today. Norman Mearle Grim Jr, aged 65, had been found guilty of the sexual assault and murder of Cynthia Campbell, despite maintaining his innocence during the trial. He received a lethal injection using a three-drug combination in Florida, marking the 15th execution in the state this year.
When asked if he had any final words, Grim simply replied, “No sir.” Following the injection, he exhibited heavy breathing and slight twitching before being pronounced dead, almost three decades after the tragic death of Ms. Campbell. The young woman was reported missing in 1998, and her battered body was discovered in the waters near the Pensacola Bay Bridge by a fisherman.
Prosecutors revealed that Ms. Campbell had sustained severe blunt-force injuries to her face and head, suggesting she had been struck with a hammer, in addition to 11 stab wounds in her chest, seven of which punctured her heart. Grim’s connection to the crime was established through DNA evidence.
Despite his denial of the crimes, Grim was convicted in 2000 and sentenced to death. This sentence was carried out today, 27 years later. Florida has seen a record number of executions this year, surpassing both Texas and Alabama. Following the signing of a death warrant and setting an execution date, inmates are given a final opportunity to appeal to the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court. Grim did not receive any visitors or meet with a spiritual advisor before his execution.
In the US, 40 individuals have been executed through court orders this year, with at least 18 more scheduled for execution in the remainder of 2025 and the following year. Florida has witnessed the highest number of executions this year, with Texas and Alabama following closely behind. Two more executions are planned in Florida next month, with Bryan Fredrick Jennings set to be executed for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in 1979.
