25% of Drivers Neglect Two-Second Gap Rule

Date:

One out of every four drivers overlooks maintaining a safe two-second gap while driving, which can result in a loss of seven car lengths when traveling at 70mph, according to experts. Many drivers tend to tailgate on highways without realizing they are not following the basic Highway Code rule, putting themselves and others in danger.

A recent study by Dick Lovett reveals that 25% of drivers do not keep the recommended two-second distance between their vehicle and the one ahead. The research indicates that each second plays a significant role, with just one second less leading to a loss of over 31 meters at highway speeds, equivalent to more than seven car lengths.

When it comes to stopping distances, the following distances are lost per second at various speeds. Motoring expert Alex Lee from Dick Lovett emphasizes the importance of the two-second rule in saving lives and provides essential tips for safe driving.

Lee advises using a fixed marker, such as a lamppost or road sign, to start counting seconds after the front car passes it. If a driver reaches the marker before completing the count, they are following too closely. Additionally, drivers should adjust their counting based on weather conditions, doubling the count to four seconds in rainy conditions and increasing it further in icy or snowy weather to ensure safe braking distances.

Furthermore, Lee suggests focusing on time rather than distance, as it is easier to gauge. Counting seconds simplifies maintaining a safe gap, regardless of the driving speed or location. With a significant percentage of drivers failing to adhere to the minimum safe gap, Dick Lovett urges motorists to reassess their driving behavior and stresses the importance of the two-second rule in preventing accidents.
