Residents in the UK are advised by the Met Office to prepare an “emergency” kit as severe weather is expected to hit various parts of the country over the weekend. The national weather agency has issued three yellow weather warnings for heavy rainfall affecting areas in Wales, northern England, and the southwest of Scotland.
The warning for parts of Wales will be in effect from midnight on Sunday for 24 hours, affecting regions such as Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, and Powys. The Met Office forecasts “heavy and persistent” rain with accumulations of 30-40mm expected widely and up to 80-100mm in elevated areas.
Another yellow rain warning covers Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria, Lancashire, and North Yorkshire starting from 3pm on Saturday until 6pm on Sunday. This warning predicts periods of heavy rain that could lead to travel disruptions and potential flooding, with rainfall amounts ranging from 30-50mm.
In Scotland, rain is expected to move in from the west on Saturday and clear out by Sunday afternoon. The forecast includes heavy rain with accumulations of 30-40mm and locally up to 60-80mm in high terrain, along with possible strong southwesterly winds.
The warnings across the 15 areas emphasize the risk of flooding and advise residents to assess their flood risk, prepare a flood plan, and assemble an emergency flood kit. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks highlighted the potential for travel disruptions and local flooding due to prolonged rainfall and saturated ground.
