The Communities Secretary has emphasized that councillors and public servants bear a moral obligation to combat antisemitism. Following the recent attack on Heaton Park Synagogue, two innocent individuals lost their lives, prompting Steve Reed to urge public spaces like libraries, community centers, and town halls to actively promote unity and deter division. The attack occurred shortly before the second anniversary of the Hamas-Israel conflict, resulting in three injuries.
In a bid to address antisemitic abuse at universities, the Education Secretary unveiled plans to educate young people on identifying and challenging online misinformation. Additionally, thousands of teachers will receive training to eliminate antisemitism in educational settings, as outlined by Bridget Phillipson.
In correspondence seen by the Sunday Mirror, Mr. Reed called on public servants and council leaders to implement practical measures to combat antisemitism in their communities. He stressed the importance of these spaces, such as libraries and markets, in fostering unity and countering hate speech.
Moreover, Mr. Reed encouraged councils to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Definition of Antisemitism, reiterating a zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism within society. He pledged to work closely with council leaders nationwide to eradicate antisemitism from public spaces, local institutions, and communities.
The government’s recent initiatives also include efforts to safeguard Jewish students on university campuses. The Union of Jewish Students will conduct 600 training sessions to equip university staff in supporting students, identifying harassment, and facilitating respectful debates. Ms. Phillipson urged vice chancellors to take proactive measures to protect Jewish students while upholding free speech rights and peaceful protest on campuses.
