Amy Dowden has shared her experience of the challenging recovery process after her battle with cancer. The 35-year-old star from Strictly Come Dancing underwent a mastectomy and rigorous chemotherapy in 2023 after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Amy chronicled her journey on social media and announced in February 2024 that she was free of the disease. However, she recently disclosed that the recovery period was more prolonged and daunting than expected, describing it as a “very scary time.”
During an interview on the Breast Cancer Uncovered podcast, Amy expressed her uncertainties about returning to dance and work, emphasizing the uncertainty of her health status. The podcast series delves into various aspects of breast cancer, including diagnosis, recovery, and lifestyle factors.
Collaborating with breast cancer surgeon Naren Basu, Amy filmed the podcast available on platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. She spoke about the emotional toll of canceling all her commitments and the prolonged journey back to full health.
Amy also emphasized the importance of breast cancer awareness and urged women to conduct regular self-examinations for any unusual signs like lumps, swelling, or changes in breast size or shape. The NHS advises women to check their breasts monthly to detect any abnormal changes early on.
The NHS recommends females aged 50 to 71 to undergo breast screenings every three years. However, individuals noticing any unusual breast changes should seek medical advice promptly.
