“UK Faces Rising Diabetes Crisis, Superdrug Warns”

Date:

Recent data suggests that approximately one in five individuals in the UK may be living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, with many unknowingly experiencing warning signs until it is too late. While type one diabetes, typically identified in childhood, is irreversible in most cases, there is a concerning increase in adults being diagnosed with type two diabetes, which presents slightly different symptoms. Niamh McMillan, Superdrug’s Pharmacy Superintendent, advises being vigilant for four key symptoms that could indicate a diabetes concern.

Symptoms for both types of diabetes are similar, although type one symptoms tend to manifest rapidly and more severely compared to type two. The signs for type two are often subtle and develop gradually over time. Common indications of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination (especially at night), persistent hunger even after eating, and constant fatigue. Additionally, unexplained weight loss may be a sign of type one diabetes.

It is crucial to note that these symptoms could point to various health issues, not solely diabetes. However, individuals showing concern are encouraged to undergo testing, available through blood tests, specific diabetes screenings, or medical assessments, some of which can be accessed at Superdrug.

Diabetes arises when there are disruptions in the body’s insulin production, a hormone vital for converting food into energy. Type one diabetes results from inadequate insulin production, often due to pancreas damage from physical injury or immune system attacks on insulin-producing cells. In contrast, type two diabetes occurs when the body either does not produce sufficient insulin or cannot effectively use it, often stemming from prediabetes.

McMillan emphasizes that, while there is no cure for diabetes, type two diabetes may go into remission if blood sugar levels are managed within safe ranges without medication. To reduce diabetes risk, she recommends weight loss, especially around the waist, as the most effective method to potentially achieve remission. A healthy diet focusing on whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can aid in regulating blood sugar levels and improving insulin sensitivity. Limiting refined sugars and processed foods is crucial to prevent blood glucose spikes. Increasing daily physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes per week, can support weight loss and help combat prediabetes and type two diabetes effects.

For those seeking to mitigate diabetes risk, adopting lifestyle changes such as losing weight, maintaining a healthy diet, and engaging in regular physical activity can be beneficial.
