New information has surfaced regarding the individual responsible for a violent incident at a synagogue in Manchester. The man behind the attack has been identified as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie. Authorities have confirmed that Al-Shamie is believed to have caused the deaths of two individuals and injured three others in a car and knife assault outside Heaton Park synagogue on Thursday morning.
The distressing event unfolded when the assailant reportedly rammed his car into worshippers outside the synagogue on Yom Kippur, a significant day in the Jewish calendar, before proceeding to launch a knife attack.
Al-Shamie, a British national of Syrian origin, arrived in the UK as a child and obtained British citizenship in 2006. Initial checks of law enforcement and security databases did not yield any records of Al-Shamie, and he was not known to be under investigation or part of the government’s anti-radicalization initiative.
According to a neighbor, Al-Shamie resided on Langley Crescent in Prestwich, close to the location of the attack. Police presence was noted in the residential area post the tragic incident, with officers seen entering and exiting a property carrying boxes. The neighbor mentioned observing Al-Shamie, who lived with a relative, exercising in his garden.
Another resident recalled seeing Al-Shamie living in the area for a decade without a spouse or children, keeping to himself. The individual was described as muscular and frequently seen in casual attire, carrying shopping bags around the neighborhood.
Law enforcement has confirmed that three men are still hospitalized with severe injuries, with one being stabbed and another hit by a car during the attack. Efforts are ongoing to formally identify the deceased victims and offer assistance to their families. Counter Terrorism Policing is actively investigating the incident to comprehend the motives behind the assault.
Three suspects, including two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s, have been apprehended on suspicion of terrorism-related activities. While formal identification is pending, authorities have linked the attack to Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent. Investigations continue as the authorities work to provide support to the affected individuals and understand the reasons behind the attack.
