A 20-year-old man in Santa Teresa, Texas, has been apprehended and charged with shooting his mother 11 times while she was asleep in their residence. Kevin Marin faces allegations of aggravated battery and attempted murder following his arrest on October 13.
Law enforcement officers in Sunland Park responded to a shooting incident at a home on Ashwood Drive where they discovered Marin’s mother severely injured outside her son’s bedroom. At the time of the shooting, four other family members, including a child, were also sleeping in the house.
The victim was rushed to Transmountain Hospital and later transferred to University Medical Center, where medical professionals confirmed she had sustained 11 gunshot wounds. As of October 14, she remained in critical condition.
Marin is currently detained at the Doña Ana County Detention Centre as prosecutors seek to have him held without bond under New Mexico’s pretrial detention statute. Reports indicate that Sunland Park police officers found an active crime scene at the residence on Ashwood Drive around 3 am local time.
According to Marin’s brother, who was present at the time of the incident, he heard Marin yelling late into the night and advised him to rest. Their mother also urged Marin to calm down as she felt he was behaving erratically.
The brother mentioned that their mother accompanied Marin to his bedroom, and shortly afterward, the tragedy unfolded. Marin’s brother was awakened by gunshots coming from the bedroom around 3 am. He discovered their mother with multiple gunshot wounds and promptly transported her to the hospital.
During the investigation, authorities recovered shell casings from a semi-automatic rifle/carbine in Marin’s bedroom. Additionally, two bullet holes were observed on the house’s exterior, and a bloody shoe print and blood droplets were found under a parked Jeep Wrangler.
After the victim was taken to the hospital, another witness returned to the residence to find Marin casually seated on the living room sofa.
