A weather specialist has issued a concerning alert that the United Kingdom might face a prolonged period of rain lasting up to 20 days leading up to the Christmas holiday season.
Jim Dale, an expert from British Weather Services, has forecasted a succession of rainy weather patterns moving in from the Atlantic during the festive period. This could potentially lead to disruptions on British roads and hazardous driving conditions.
Jim attributed these conditions to two key factors: the winter season and the influence of climate change. His warning about the effects of intensified and accumulated rainfall closely followed a ‘danger to life’ advisory issued by the Met Office for parts of England and Wales due to anticipated heavy rainfall.
Highlighting the current situation, Jim stated, “The primary concern at the moment is the rain, commencing today. Looking ahead, the upcoming 20 days are expected to be predominantly influenced by Atlantic weather systems, driven by low pressure, with associated front systems bringing substantial rainfall, particularly impacting western regions.”
He further added, “Significantly above-average rainfall is anticipated in western areas, including Wales, western England, and the northwest. The intensity gradually diminishes as we move towards the east. The focus should be on the western regions where people need to be vigilant regarding rising river levels and challenging driving conditions.”
Jim cautioned that the relentless downpour could result in challenging circumstances such as flooding. He elaborated, “The rainfall will be exacerbated, heightening concerns for subsequent rainfall events, accompanied by the development of strong winds.”
Looking ahead, he projected a shift to colder weather around December 20 as a result of the southward movement of the 528 thickness line. Jim also anticipated an escalation in amber and yellow weather warnings, possibly even a red warning if conditions deteriorate, with the Atlantic driving low-pressure systems towards the UK.
The weather expert emphasized the importance of caution when dealing with the weather conditions.
Last week, the Met Office issued a rare amber weather warning and a danger to life alert for parts of Wales starting on December 1. The Met Office stated, “Heavy rain is expected to sweep over South Wales between late Sunday and late Monday. The rainfall, particularly over high ground areas like Bannau Brycheiniog, could be heavy and persistent. Rainfall is expected to clear eastward by Monday night.”
The forecast indicated that 20-40 mm of rain would be widespread across the region, with up to 60-80 mm accumulating over south- and southwest-facing high ground in south Wales, potentially reaching 100-120 mm in certain areas. The heavy rain could increase the risk of flooding and landslides, with strong south to southwesterly winds, possibly leading to gales along coasts and high terrain.
