A recent study examining over 5,800 food items in the American diet has revealed that consuming a soft drink could reduce a person’s “healthy life” by 12 minutes. Researchers from The University of Michigan conducted this study, which was published in the Nature Food journal. They also found that eating a hot dog could diminish 36 minutes of a healthy life, while consuming nuts and seeds could potentially add 25 minutes.
Moreover, the research highlighted the increasing availability of vegetarian and vegan options in American diets, emphasizing the impact of food choices on personal health and the environment. According to Katerina Stylianou and Olivier Jolliet, researchers involved in the study, people are becoming more conscious of how their food decisions affect both their well-being and the planet.
The study analyzed individual foods based on their composition and assessed their effects on human health using data from the Global Burden of Disease epidemiological study. Additionally, the environmental impacts of various foods were evaluated through the IMPACT World+ method, considering factors such as processing, manufacturing, consumption, and waste.
Making small dietary changes, such as replacing 10% of meat consumption with vegetables, could potentially extend healthy living by 48 minutes. The researchers recommend incorporating nutritionally valuable foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sustainable seafood into daily meals while reducing the intake of processed meats and environmentally harmful foods.
In light of the study’s findings, Jolliet emphasized the importance of dietary modifications for improving human health and environmental sustainability. The research suggests that targeted substitutions in dietary habits can lead to significant health benefits and reduce environmental impact without requiring drastic changes to one’s diet.
