The resident GP of BBC Morning Live, Oscar Duke, has shared an inexpensive kitchen essential costing 68p that could address cold and flu symptoms, offering an alternative to visiting a pharmacy. This advice comes amidst a surge of the ‘winter vomiting bug’ in the UK, prompting a caution to stay home.
During a recent appearance on the program in 2024, Dr. Duke discussed how common household items found in your pantry might combat seasonal illnesses, emphasizing the potential benefits of regular table salt.
Highlighting the effectiveness of table salt, Dr. Duke suggested that mixing it with water could offer immediate relief. Table salt is readily available at most supermarkets, with Tesco selling a bottle for 68p, and Asda and Waitrose offering options for less than £1, making it a budget-friendly remedy already present in many households.
Dr. Duke clarified that there is no cure for viruses causing common colds, and current treatments primarily focus on managing symptoms as the virus takes its course, according to Gloucestershire Live.
He further explained that saltwater drops could potentially reduce symptom duration by approximately two days, recommending a homemade solution of three teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon of bicarbonate mixed in cooled boiled water, which can be administered using various methods like a spray or dropper.
Referring to a recent study, Dr. Duke noted the positive impacts of saltwater drops on cold symptoms by helping alleviate discomfort by clearing mucus, although the virus remains unaffected by the treatment.
According to the NHS, cold symptoms typically develop gradually over two to three days, with common indicators such as a sore throat, cough, or runny nose.
In addition to saltwater, Dr. Duke also recommended honey as a potential remedy for cold symptoms, citing studies suggesting that a dose of honey before bed can provide relief. Additionally, he mentioned the benefits of chicken soup in aiding respiratory health and clearing mucus from airways.
