A recent sentencing review highlighted a rise in prison sentences without a corresponding increase in prison capacity under the Conservatives, leading to overcrowded prisons. Labour criticizes Jenrick for undermining judicial independence for personal gain.
The Government’s crackdown on the Sentencing Council, prohibiting the issuance of guidelines to judges, stems from a dispute over perceived inequality in justice delivery. The Sentencing Council was reprimanded for suggesting that judges consider factors like ethnicity or gender when determining the need for a pre-sentence report.
