Chimpanzee Expert Dr. Jane Goodall Passes at 91

Date:

Famed chimpanzee expert Dr. Jane Goodall passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. Recognized as the world’s foremost authority on these animals, she devoted her life to their preservation.

Dr. Goodall, a UN Messenger of Peace and Founder, conducted groundbreaking research and sadly died during a speaking engagement in California. The news of her passing was shared on her official Facebook page.

The statement confirmed her death, stating, “The Jane Goodall Institute received the news today, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, of the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, due to natural causes.”

Jane, born in London on April 3, 1934, to Mortimer Herbert Goodall and Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, developed a passion for animals in her youth, particularly birds and native English wildlife. Her fascination led her to study zoology and ethology.

After working as a secretary at Oxford University, Jane took on a job at a London film company to fund her dream of exploring African wildlife. In the late 1950s, she was invited to Kenya by a friend, where she crossed paths with paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey, who offered her a position at a local museum.

Dr. Leakey later sponsored Jane’s research trip to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study wild chimpanzees. Despite initial challenges, she gained the trust of the chimp community, notably a primate named David Greybeard.

Throughout her career, Jane made groundbreaking discoveries about chimpanzees, challenging previous scientific beliefs. Despite facing criticism from peers, she earned her PhD in 1966 and dedicated the next two decades to studying chimpanzees at the National Park.

Driven by a desire for conservation and activism, Jane established the Jane Goodall Institute and initiated programs to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. She continued her advocacy work tirelessly until her passing, traveling extensively to raise awareness and funds for their cause.

In a recent interview, Jane emphasized the importance of hope and her ongoing mission to protect wildlife. Her dedication to conservation and education, particularly through the Roots and Shoots program, showcased her unwavering commitment to the environment and future generations.
