“MP McVey Faces Embarrassment Over Thatcher Remarks”

Date:

During a Conservative Party conference in Manchester commemorating the 100th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher’s birth, Tory MP Esther McVey faced embarrassment for suggesting what Thatcher would do to address current issues, only to realize that her own party had been in power for 14 years without taking those actions. McVey, who previously served as Rishi Sunak’s minister for common sense, criticized Labour’s GB Energy and expressed concerns about the influence of quangos, blaming Tony Blair for creating a situation where these entities had excessive control. She acknowledged that the Conservative Party had missed opportunities during its 14-year tenure. The event host, Robert Colvile, humorously echoed her sentiments, leading to laughter among attendees.

McVey later attempted to reconcile her statements by emphasizing the evolving alignment between politicians and the public. Meanwhile, Labour criticized Tory leader Kemi Badenoch for not acknowledging her party’s past mistakes during its 14-year rule, accusing the Conservatives of repeating old errors without learning from them. Labour positioned itself as the party focused on national renewal through economic growth, border security, and improving the welfare of working-class citizens.
