The family of a cheerful father is facing a critical situation in Turkey following a recent scooter accident. John Kearney, aged 64, was vacationing with friends in İçmeler, Marmaris, when the incident occurred. While returning to his hotel on Tuesday evening, he had a fall from the rental scooter, resulting in a severe head injury.
He was swiftly taken to a nearby medical facility where he is currently in a critical condition. His daughter Joanna Kearney shared the emotional story of receiving a call from his friend, informing her about the accident. Joanna recounted feeling surreal and overwhelmed by the situation, struggling to grasp the reality of the events unfolding.
Two days later, on October 2, the family was advised to travel to Turkey as the hospital intended to discontinue John’s life support. Joanna and other family members flew to Turkey, but faced challenges visiting him due to hospital regulations. Despite initial restrictions, Joanna and her uncle managed to see John, with the medical team planning to reduce sedation to assess his responsiveness and brain activity.
Amidst the distress, Joanna expressed the family’s struggle with the language barrier, hindering their understanding of the situation and the associated costs. Additionally, she highlighted the insurance issue, mentioning that the policy might not cover the medical expenses due to John not wearing a helmet during the accident.
The family remains anxious as they await updates on John’s condition, particularly waiting for the brain swelling to decrease for a better prognosis. A fundraising initiative has been initiated to aid in covering John’s medical costs with the goal of bringing him back to Merseyside. Donations can be made to support this cause.
