“Wife of Murderer Confesses to Withholding Evidence”

Date:

A man convicted of the murder of primary school teacher Ashling Murphy confessed to his wife, expressing remorse for the crime. Jozef Puska, the perpetrator, disclosed to his wife Lucia Istokova that he did not intend to kill the victim.

During a court session, it was revealed that Puska informed Istokova about the incident, causing her to be scared and hesitant to report the matter to authorities. The tragic event occurred when Ashling Murphy, 23, was fatally stabbed by Puska while she was running along the Grand Canal in Cappincur, Tullamore, Co Offaly, Ireland, on January 12, 2022.

At a sentencing hearing in Dublin’s Central Criminal Court, Istokova, along with Puska’s brothers and their wives, faced legal proceedings. Puska’s siblings acknowledged overhearing his confession regarding the attack on a woman and revealed that their wives were instructed to destroy the clothes he wore during the crime, as reported by Belfast Live.

The court was informed that Puska’s wife and brothers could face up to five years in prison, while the brothers’ wives may be sentenced to a maximum of ten years. However, the sentencing was postponed by Judge Caroline Biggs pending victim impact statements from the Murphy family.

Prosecution revealed that Istokova was charged with withholding crucial information from authorities after her husband’s crime, failing to disclose details such as his return home with injuries, his admission to the crime, ownership of a bike found at the scene, and his travel to Dublin on the night of the incident.

Although Istokova initially did not reveal these details, she later admitted during a police interview that Puska had expressed regret for the killing and indicated a need to leave. She explained her fear of disclosing these facts to the authorities and expressed remorse for not coming forward earlier.

Defending Istokova, Colman Fitzgerald SC emphasized her acknowledgment of wrongdoing, as she pleaded guilty for her involvement in the case. Istokova, who is now raising her children alone, is deeply remorseful for her actions and the impact on her family.

The court was informed of potential challenges faced by Istokova’s children due to their father’s absence, with Istokova striving to shield them from the harsh reality. The proceedings were adjourned to allow for the reading of victim impact statements from the Murphy family on October 22.
