Unifor and General Motors have initiated talks for a new labor agreement, starting negotiations in downtown Toronto. The union represents over 4,600 members at various GM facilities in Ontario, including the Oshawa plant, CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock. National president Lana Payne and GM Canada’s president and managing director, Jack Uppal, commenced discussions with a handshake to signify the beginning of talks.
Chairs were arranged in a conference room as officials sat facing each other, with Payne positioned in the middle and Uppal directly across. Payne stated in a press release on Monday that they are building on the foundation set by the pattern agreement with Ford, aiming for constructive talks on company operations and the future of auto jobs at GM in Canada. The union has set a target deadline of August 21 to reach a tentative agreement with GM.
In a separate statement, Uppal expressed the company’s deep respect for the collective bargaining process and the vital role of its employees in its success. He highlighted GM’s substantial investments in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, totaling $3.3 billion, to facilitate next-generation products and secure long-term Canadian jobs. The company’s objective is to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement that supports employees while ensuring GM Canada’s competitiveness in the future.
Earlier in July, Unifor members approved a new three-year contract with Ford, including annual pay increases of three percent. The deal, effective from September 21, also encompassed commitments such as a no-closure agreement and program enhancements across all Ford facilities. Unifor and Ford additionally agreed on a program to assist laid-off workers from the Oakville assembly plant in securing full employment by July 2027.
Pattern bargaining was successfully employed in negotiations with Ford, setting a precedent for future agreements in the sector. Unifor members voted in favor of the deal, with significant support from various local unions. President Lana Payne emphasized the gains achieved in wage increases and job security through the Ford agreement, expressing confidence in navigating potential challenges in the future.
Despite the success with Ford, upcoming talks with General Motors and Stellantis may present complexities due to differences in decisions made by the companies during recent trade uncertainties. Challenges facing the automotive industry, including U.S. tariffs and the introduction of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada, add further pressure to the current negotiations between Unifor and the remaining Detroit Three automakers.
