The queen of pop is making a triumphant return to claim her throne.
An MTV Video Music Awards legend has emerged as the top contender in this year’s nominations, and surprisingly, it’s not Taylor Swift. Madonna has secured the most nominations at the VMAs for the third time in her career.
With a total of 11 nominations at the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s recognition includes nods for artist of the year and video of the year, all attributed to her highly successful album Confessions II and its corresponding film.
Outshining Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most individual wins in VMA history, Madonna’s achievements stand out with her nine nominations for her album The Life of a Showgirl and the music video for The Fate of Ophelia. Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each landing seven nominations.

Madonna previously led the nominations at the VMAs in 1990 and 1998 during her Vogue and Ray of Light eras. However, her most memorable VMA moment dates back to the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she made a lasting impact with her performance of Like a Virgin in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, challenging the boundaries of cable television at the time.
This iconic performance is still hailed as a groundbreaking moment that pushed the limits of what was deemed acceptable on cable TV.
Madonna’s impressive array of nominations encompasses video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for Bring Your Love, a collaboration with fellow nominee Carpenter.
Competing for the coveted video of the year award alongside Swift’s Ophelia are Grande’s Hate That I Made You Love Me, Carpenter’s Tears, Mars’s I Just Might, and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s Storm.
Voting for 13 categories is open to the public this year. The winners will be unveiled during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
